Zen Out? Om In!

Updated: Jun 30, 2021

Hi Fit Fam,

So sorry about the late post this week. We had some backend technical difficulties. But as the blog post title suggests, we decided to peace out and go with the flow.

Life can throw curveballs at us, but we are in control of a lot. What can you do in times of stress? When you feel overwhelmed or anxious? You can focus on your breathing, make time for yourself, journal, take a walk in nature, exercise, eat healthy food, sleep enough, and we could go on.

Stress doesn't necessarily mean sporadic events of extreme overwhelm like an accident. Daily life offers plenty of stressors. From traffic while driving to a broken appliance. Often these seemingly small environmental factors add up, causing chronic stress. Over time this affects our mind as well as our body.

Working from home, social distancing, and recurring waves of the pandemic seems to be a new normal. Adapting to this requires us to make lifestyle changes. Working remotely while feeling isolated can be burdensome. Having reduced options for regular physical exercise and social activities, we must think differently and creatively about keeping our mind and body healthy. Even finding ways to exercise can be a cause of stress. Exercising from home can be challenging for many of us, especially those who don't usually do a lot of physical exercise. But physical fitness is essential for people of all ages and abilities.

All of these factors have contributed to added anxiety.

We are here to help. Our dedicated team of instructors are waiting to help you reach your fitness goals. When you join our community, you get a support system for physical fitness. We offer an assortment of in-person as well as remote classes, nutritional coaching, medical massage, seasonal classes, fun fitness challenges, and more.

Some ways experts suggest to combat stress are mindfulness, breathing, and Yoga. So what is mindfulness? Simply put, it means being able to acknowledge everything going on while remaining focussed on the present.

If you are interested in mindfulness exercises, keep your eyes out for our next challenge. *hint* Members enjoy challenges as a membership perk.

An easy way to practice mindfulness is to focus on breathing.

Another way to manage stress is by practicing Yoga. But why Yoga? How did this ancient Indian practice become a hot hit?

Frankly, (being from India) Yoga has been #treding in the East since forever. The reason the practice of Yoga is so popular is because of the multitude of benefits it offers.

The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word "Yuj," which means union or joining. The practice of Yoga unites mind, body, and spirit.

Combining various breathing techniques with poses, channeling energy mindfully through every limb being used, focussing on the muscles being stretched, Yoga is the embodiment of mindful exercise.

Every year, International Yoga day is celebrated on the 21st of June. Instructors, students, and yoga enthusiasts get together to create awareness about the benefits of Yoga.

This year at Salsa City Fitness, we are celebrating International Yoga day with Sunset Yoga. Join Kari at Salsa City Studio Troy on Monday, the 21st of June at 6.30 P.M. SIGN UP HERE.

The theme for international yoga day 2021 is Yoga for well-being. As the pandemic continues to upend the lives of several people across the world, we are fortunate enough to be seeing what seems like the light at the end of the tunnel. The pandemic has affected the physical as well as mental well-being of people across the globe. Working from home, while cooking, cleaning, caring for children, watching loved ones succumb to the pandemic, not being able to see our families or travel, all of it has taken its toll.

Yoga is a one-stop shop for better physical and mental wellness. The practice of Yoga teaches us holistic wellness. Just like the asanas promote physical balance, the practice of mindfulness, and breathing exercise, promote mental balance.

Unlike more rigorous exercises like HIIT, Yoga is a gentle way to transition your body into movement. When you practice Yoga, you stretch, improve flexibility, restore strength and flow. This helps improve balance and body alignment. It conditions joints, helps build long, lean muscles.

Yoga can help take your fitness to the next level.

If you are a runner, Yoga is the perfect recovery exercise. Additionally, regular practice of Yoga can loosen tightness, strengthen weak areas and reduce the chance of injury.

If you practice weight training but are trying to remain flexible and lean, Muscle cells accumulate lactic acid from heavyweight training; Yoga draws oxygen into muscles. Yoga is an amazing way to prevent muscle fatigue, tightness, and injury.

For swimmers, too, Yoga offers benefits. The asanas encourage your body to hold its weight in various positions, engaging the stabilizer and core muscles that help in swimming.

Yoga is an excellent exercise if you're beginning to see some sag in your skin and a bit of unwanted belly fat. It improves muscle tone, can increase metabolism, help in weight loss, especially abdominal fat.

If you suffer from PCOS or PCOD, practicing Yoga may help decrease testosterone levels and stimulate acupressure points that promote hormonal balance.

Stress is a significant contributor to PCOS and Yoga promotes relaxation. (Remember, Yoga or any form of exercise is only one part of an overall treatment plan for PCOS.)

If you suffer from gas, bloating, acid reflux, or other digestive issues, Yoga can help. By increasing blood circulation, reducing stress, putting pressure on the right points, Yoga can stimulate digestion, thus reducing bloating.

If you feel a lack of concentration, frequent distractions, and general emotional overwhelm in meeting deadlines, Yoga can help you focus better. The practice of mindfulness keeps one calm by teaching the mind to focus on the task at hand, keeping fluctuating thoughts at bay.

Yoga can improve your skin, hair, and nails by enhancing the circulation of blood.

Salsa City Fitness Offers a variety of Yoga classes.

Aerial Yoga

Aerial Yoga (also known as anti-gravity yoga) involves exercises inspired by Yoga, Pilates, & acrobatics. It is performed using a hammock, thus achieving a total lengthening &toning of the body. Aerial Yoga works with gravity by facilitating bending and stretching the whole body during exercise, strengthening and rehabilitating muscles and joints, and decompressing the spine as the body hangs freely. Relax and realign the body, center the mind, uplift the spirit no matter what fitness level- explore new boundaries!

Traditional yoga poses, which improve the circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems through increased blood flow and movement, are taken to a new level and combined with the arts of Pilates and dance with the integration of the use of a hammock.

Aerial Yoga is for Advanced Levels; we suggest at least (1) attendance to the All Levels Aerial Yoga class. *Please refrain from heavy perfumes and from wearing sleeveless tops

*Class cost options: Drop-in rate- $13/ class; OR (2) punches on SCF punch card; OR $69/ month Premium membership: included

Vinyasa Flow Yoga

Vinyasa Flow Yoga is the practice of centering, calming, and controlling breathing patterns to revive the body through a series of carefully structured postures that help to move lymph and debris throughout the body, acting as an internal massage of the organs. Vinyasa Flow Yoga can also aid in proper body alignment; and providing limber, more fluid joints, thus bringing balance, healing, and mental clarity.

At Salsa City Fitness, we use a diverse blend of Hatha Yoga, incorporating methods such as Vinyasa, Yin, Gentle, intermediate, and advanced styles to meet the needs and practices of each student.
